SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder by Naomi

SAD is sometimes known as "winter depression" because the symptoms are usually more apparent and more severe during the winter. The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it's often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days. The main theory is that a lack of sunlight might stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus working properly, which may affect the production of melatonin, seratonin and the body's internal clock (circadian rhythm), in turn making us feel incredibly low, irritable, teary, unsociable and lethargic.



The main treatments for SAD are very similar to those of depression (with an addition of Light therapy) and you just need to find what works for you. Getting outdoors, eating well, getting more sleep, talking, just generally anything to increase those seratonin levels.

massage therapy treatment periods. Having a massage or facial can increase your seratonin, dopomine and endorphins leaving you feeling happy, relaxed and stress free. We have some lovely Ashmira Botanica Spa Rituals that also include chimes and a singing bowl to further increase your stress relief and relaxation. And finally, laughter!! You can often hear either myself or Emma giggling from the treatment room, or the pair of us laughing as you arrive at reception. We are never short of a few laughs here and love it when you join us for an hour or two of laughter therapy!! (Please note, we are not actual qualified laughter therapists, we just love a giggle!!).
